EDMwire History

Autodesk developer since 1992.

The first software package was developed out of a need to send a file from AutoCAD directly to the Fire 9000 photo plotter, a product of Cymbolic Sciences. The primary requirements were that the file should run correctly the first time, there should be no file editing and no operator intervention because each attempt to print could cost as much as $100.00 and the machine could be thousands of miles away.

The Fire 9000 has a 24x36 inch format @ 16,000 dots/inch on clear film which is used by the circuit board and integrated chip manufacturers.

The program evolved over three years into a product that is still in use today. The Fire 9000 uses a flavor of Gcode called the" MDA Gerber Format" which is a subset of EIA RS-274-D. RS-274-D (the same code standard Mitsubishi uses in its wire machines).

By 1996, EDM wire was required by one of our subsidiaries, which necessitated choosing one wire machine to work with. The Mitsubishi FX10 fit the bill because of its hands-on ability, programming style and transparency, which allowed unhindered observation of its workings.

Following is a list of criteria required for the software:

  1. Simple to Learn: Maximum 1 to 2 hours.
  2. Easy to Operate: for amateur or professional
  3. All Features: capable of using all the features of the Mitsubishi FX10
  4. No Code Editing: capable of running the wire machine without editing the code.
  5. Support / Service: service and support must be readily available
Every software package available failed to meet the criteria because of the extremely long list of code the software generated and the poor use or lack of control over the wire machine, so our company created new software using AutoCAD as its editor, which is accessible and user friendly. In 2002 a full-time programmer was hired to finish and maintain the program. The program has now evolved to the point that it works in AutoCAD R14, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006. It runs the 90HA, CX, SX, FX, FXK, QA, RA, FA, FA-P, and FA-V Mitsubishi wire machines.

The company's goals are simple:

  1. Create a CAM program that is easy to learn, quick to operate, and outputs good working code
  2. Add new features as requested
  3. Offer excellent service and support
  4. Update the software as often as required
  5. Create a new standard of CAD/CAM for the Mitsubishi wire machines
  6. Most important of all, keep the program affordable with a low start up cost and a low annual maintenance fee
  7. The company's desire is to create a program that meets and / or exceeds these goals together with the input of satisfied clients.

Thank you to all the people who have worked so hard over the years to help create this program including the Applications Department at MC Machinery Systems in Wood Dale, IL and Cypress, CA.
